to engage the starter. ? the engine should start in nuetral shouldn't it. I pressed the brake down and still no go. I am trying to narrow down the problem. It would help is some people provided an email address instead of my having to keep posting questions and answers like this. Also does anyone know a cheap but reliable mechanic near Canton, Ohio

You have a couple of answers already. If your truck has a *manual* shift transmission, you should have a *clutch* pedal on the left side of your brake pedal. You say you have tried placing the transmission in *neutral*, so you either had to press down on the *clutch* pedal to release the clutch for shifting from any gear position to *neutral* -- or do something else. If your truck has an *automatic* transmission, pushing down on the brake pedal does nothing for you in changing gears unless the engine is running. Your ignition key should be operable in either the 'park' position or the 'neutral' position. If it is NOT operable in either of those gear positions, there is something *wrong* in your ignition lock assembly. You'll have to have the assistance of a mechanic to fix it.

used to own an s-10, plus my husband was a technician specialist for martin chevrolet for 28 years and general motors totaling over 35 years.anyway our truck had a similar problem and i was just teaching myself how to drive a stick shift, and when i learned about how neutral could work i thought cool, but she gave me the same problem, and when i talked to my hubs ex,who knew truck better than me she said cause it had a heavy clutch that i really had to make sure i had it pushed down all the way.so i did that and she was right,i wasn't pressing hard enough on it,so when i tried applying more pressure to clutch it kicked over,so try that n see if it works for u.if it don't then i'll wake up Bob n ask him, okay? well.good luck
