Russell Crowe in Robin Hood = Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins

Russell Crowe has been in some pretty good movies. Ridley Scott has directed some excellent movies. How on earth was Crowe allowed to get away with his shocking accent. At least Kevin Costner had the good sense ( although it didn't seem like it at the time) not to bother with attempting an English accent at all.
Has there been a worse attempt at an English accent in recent times?

Russell Crowe has been in some good movies? Sorry but never seen a good performance from him ever, he should piss off back to Neighbours.

But I do agree with you about Robin Hood. To me it was not the fact he tried the accent and ended up sounding like an Irishman. Its the fact he was even cast in the first place. Why does Hollywood always insist on casting actors and actresses in roles as English people, when they are not English. Costner was bad enough, but Prince of Thieves was saved by Alan Rickman. This time around they have gone stupid, and cast somebody who could not get further away from England.

Seen the trailers and a few clips of the movie and know that much like the disaster that was Robert Downey Jnr's Sherlock Holmes, I will not be watching this movie ever.

Note to Hollywood, if you want to make a film about a cult British/English figure make sure to use a British/English actor or actress in the role. For example Robin Hood, why cast an idiot like Russell Crowe when Sean Bean would have cost a quarter of the price to hire, and is actually from Yorkshire just like Robin Hood was.

Hollywood? blame the director..isn't he..british?:D
As for it being a requirement that parts are played by only the english..please, every other american character is played by a brit/aus these days on film and tv, theres no need to get petty about it.

Sean Bean would have been an excellent choice, he's a really good actor. Much better than temperamental Crowe anyway. Gladiator was his finest hour and that was ages ago.

As for your slur against Dick van Dyke... how very dare you? I love him in Mary Poppins, there is nobody who could have bettered him in the old bamboo.

Not getting petty at all, just stating facts. Brits have more of a grasp of accents than Yanks, Cannucks, Ozzies, or Kiwi's. Every single time they cast people from other places to play an Englishman they screw it all up. Name me one that hasn't? And as far as I know the only person playing a Yank on TV is Hugh Laurie, and he is proving my point as he keeps winning Emmy's and Golden Globe's for his performance, and the American public love him.

Its like with all the speculation surrounding the next Bond movie, An American entertainment show just last week said that if it does not get off the ground soon its possible Daniel Craig could leave the project, who did they say was favourite to take over? Ashton Kutcher. Who yes can be a very good actor but is all wrong for James Bond just like Russell Crowe is all wrong for Robin Hood. Not only are they not believable due to the fact they murder the accent, but it is a slap in the face to the British public.

The sooner Hollywood gets the idea that it is better for them to cast British Actors and Actresses to play British roles, the better. For those that question it being better, I have proof that it is better. When you are making a movie centred around a British character, your main target audience is the British. Yes there are some British cult heroes that translate well enough to be cult heroes around the world, but the British is still your main target audience as that is where you are going to get your best and most honest reviews. Brits praise the movie and say how good it was, others around the world listen as who would know better than British people if it is any good. We know our own history better than others around the world.

It is just plain disrespectful to cast any random foreigner in the role. It tells the British public "Sorry but you are just not good enough". If we are not good enough to play people from our own country, then why should we throw millions and millions of pounRAB at the movie, because we obviously are not good enough to give our opinions either.

Add to the fact that casting a drama queen like Russell Crowe costs four times as much as casting a British actor, thus pushing the budget up higher, you'd think the studio would look at that and understand its a good idea to cast a British Actor. To blame the director is a valid point, yes Ridley should have known better, but its not always the director that picks the cast, they have input but sometimes the studio demanRAB that a certain person be given roles. The director can challenge it and try to prove them wrong but if the studio is set on one person they can either force the casting of that person or they fire the director. That is why I say Hollywood is to blame as too many big American studios think they know more about British cult heroes than anyone else.

What the hell is next, Tom Cruise starring in a movie as one of the Kray twins?

You've discredited yourself right there.
No need for the rest.

Dr house succeeRAB in america because of the fact they aren't petty, proving my point. Unlike in the uk americans don't constantly nitpick regional accents.

How have I discredited myself, by stating that Hugh Laurie is the only Brit I know of playing a yank on TV? You obviously have no grasp of the term "That I know of" So it is you that is discredited.

Your lack of knowledge makes the grounRAB for your pettiness on this issue...groundless.

To list just a few, Tim Roth of lie to me, Damian Lewis of life, Michelle Ryan of bionic woman, Dominic West and Idris Elba of the wire, Jamie Bamber of battlestar gallactica, Joseph Fiennes of flash forward, Jared Harris of mad men, Eddie Izzard and Minnie Driver of the riches, Ian McShane of deadwood, Jason Isaacs of brotherhood, Kevin McKidd of journeyman, Kevin McKidd of law and order, Marianne Jean-Baptiste of without a trace, Louise Lombard of csi, Sonja Walger of flashforward/lost, Owain Yeoman of mentalist/generation kill, and plenty more.

You are lucky americans aren't as petty and small minded as some of you are.

There's loaRAB in Flashforward, to the point people are blaming them for it being cancelled!
There have (as you correctly pointed out) been many British people playing Americans, some no longer on air. I hate this whole British person must be a British person on film. No, it should be talent should be picked ahead of anything else. Which is why I don't understand the Russell Crowe casting. The man really has one act and it got stale ages ago.

O and just for the future reference, because she is bound to end up playing an American (likely she already has). Gemma Arterton is the fastest growing American actresses in Hollywood at the moment

Excuse me, but this just serves to prove my point, how does this discredit me in anyway? Now name Americans, Canadians or other nationalities that have played Brits and done a good job?

Errr, not quite right.

A couple of years ago myself and a friend were talking to an American friend and 'House' came up.

One of us pointed out that Hugh Laurie is English.

The American couldn't believe it - he insisted Hugh was American and, moreover, from that part of the Country. This gentleman was from New Hampshire - rather close to where House is set. He said Mr Laurie's accent, rhythm and inflections/stresses were that of a local.

The same was true with Michael Caine in The Cider House Rules - where Bostonians reckon the accent was spot on.

Tim Roth does not speak with an American accent in 'Lie to me' his character is English. Likewise Sonya Walger, her character in 'Lost' is English too.

Does it matter? its a film about a character who's actual existence is yet to be conclusively proven, not a historical documentary.

If you wanted to be 100% accurate the English being spoken at the time of Robin Hood was so different to the English we speak now you would need subtitles.

Also, Crowe's fellow Aussies Nicole Kidman (The Hours and The Others) and Cate Blanchett ( Notes On A Scandal) do excellent English accents.

As annoying as I find her at times, Gwyneth Paltrow can do a flawless English accent (Sliding Doors). Female actors from other countries seem to have less problems mastering British accents, than male actors. I think Don Cheadle is a great actor, but his cockney accent in Oceans 11 was laughable.

As much as I respect your opinion, it is not shared by that many folk. He has been praised by fans, critics and his peers in such fiilms as Romper Stomper, The Insider, LA Confidential, Beautiful Mind and of course won the ultimate acting accolade for Gladiator.

Do you say the same in regarRAB to Christian Bale and Gary Oldman? Both British actors who seemingly star in predominantly American roles.
