Ruptured Disk

My brother has pain in his back so excruciating that it almost brings him to tears. He was told he might have a ruptured disk. I would think they would know after the tests he has been through. He is going through physical therapy and he says the only thing that somewhat helps is Alieve.

Is this something that only surgery will alleviate? - Sam
