Running T1 and T3 questions

I've got the T1 and have maxed out most of the RAM (even with PowerRUN), so I just received an Open Box T3 and am looking forward to playing with the new gadget.

Does anyone know if I can run both machines under the same User Name? Or do I need to name them separately?

Any advice on transferring most/if not all info from the T1 to T3 (I do have BackupBuddy and BackupMan on the T1 card)?

Are the Desktop softwares sooo different from each other?

Thanks for ANY help!

First, don't even think about trying to sync to units with the same username to the same PC. You'll end up with a jumbled up mess that you'll never clean up. Use two different usernames.

The T1 and T3 desktops are both different from each other, the T1 will sync with the T3 desktop but won't take advantage of the additional features like calendar catefories and colors or the additional contact fields. I'd recommend you use the T3 desktop so you can at least get the advantages of the new PIM's on the T3.

Transferring programs using an SD card should be easy enough with a card reader. You may be better off reinstalling some programs if you have the program in RAM and the data on the SD card but any program that works on the the T1 should work on the T3. The only issue would be shareware that's registered to your T1 username. You'd have to purchase another license to use the same program on the T3.

I have a similar if not the same question as gnoodles. I believe that Jim is helping me in what I should do. I had a T2 before and have put that with some one else. I just got my T3 and the Palm Wireless keyboard in. (Just a side note: I got a great deal from Buy.com $337 for T3 with the keyboard. I thought that it was a pretty good deal.) I no longer have access to the T2. I did a hotsync before I let it go so all my info is on the Palm Desktop etc. So here are some questions:

1.Is the wisest thing to install the new Palm desktop sftwr first?
1.a. If so what happens to my data in the old desktop and other programs etc, do they get wiped out? I remember doing this from an old version that I had with a IIIc before and seems like it updated everything allright.
1.b. If they do get wiped out by installing the new version how can I at least save the data in some format and be able to bring it back into the new desktop software?
1.c. If they don't get wiped out is there any thing else that I need to watch out for?
2. It sounds like I need to give my T3 a different name than my T2 had and that I should only do that after I have installed the new desktop sftwr. Is this a correct assesment?
3. Here is an interesting question. I had an old IIIc (as mentioned above) that I use to use as well and it had the older version of the desktop sftwr and install app. When I installed the new desktop sftwr for the T2 it installed the new install apps however the old install app sftwar remained on my PC. When I used the new Install app to install software on my T2 my T2 would not hotsync and I had to remove the program from the new install app and install the program using the old install app and then it would hotsync and the program that I installed would work properly on the T2. Needless to say I would like to solve this problem with my T3 and be able to fix this problem. Any wisdom on the subject would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Rob,

As a general rule, here is what I do when I upgrade:

1. Backup everything in your Username folder to another, temporary folder just in case you run into a problem.

2. Uninstall the T2 desktop and then install the T3 desktop. This shouldn't remove any of your data.

3. DON'T give your T3 a different username than your T2. None of your third party applications will be restored and any shareware that is keyed to you username won't be registered. Since the T2 and T3 have basically the same operating system, restoring from your T2 backup to your T3 shouldn't cause any major problems.

4. Once you've restored from your backup, you need to decide if you want to use the legacy PIM apps or the new T3 PIM apps. If you're using a third party PIM application like Agendus or DateBk5, you'll want to use the legacy apps and conduits. If you're using only the built-in PIM apps, you'll want to use the new apps and conduits. Take some time to read up on these and the differences between the two options in the PDF manual on the T3 CD. There will be particular issues with having to run both the legacy conduits and the new conduits if you want to sync both the T3 and the IIIc.

5. The only software issues you're likely to run into is getting updated versions that can use the larger screen of the T3 and the screen rotation feature. The PalmOne web site has some information on programs that have updates specifically for the T3. There are also threads here on software issues with the the T3 you should look over.

As far as the IIIc coexisting with the T3, the first thing you'll need will be a different user name for each. The problem is that that the IIIc uses serial drivers and serial port and the T3 uses USB drivers and a USB port. These can usually coexist but it's a matter of installing the drivers in the correct order. Usually, if you install the T3 desktop and drivers first, WinXP will recognize the IIIc when it's hooked up to the serial port and install the default drivers that come with Windows. If you're not using XP, it's a little more tricky. You'll have to install just the drivers for the IIIc (not the standard desktop install) and hope that doesn't disable the USB sync. If it does, you need to reinstall just the USB drivers for the T3 and that should allow both sets of drivers to work. The IIIc will sync with the T3 desktop but it won't be able to take advantage of the new PIM features like calendar categories and the additional contact fields.

Jim,

Thank you for the detailed directions.

As I have thought about this I want to give my T3 a different user name. My T2 was given to another company with a another peice of equipment for measureing X-rays as a demonstration unit. I will still need to hotsync on my PC with the T2 and it will keep its name and all the programs that exist on it. I still do this with the IIIc as well since we still use it with one of our demonstrater units.

Will there be a problem in doing this?

Does this make it easier in any way and will it change the procedure that you outlined?

Do you have any thoughts on my other question that I wrote in my preveous post (see below):

Just an update on what I did and everything seems to be working well.

I did not uninstall my older version of Palm Desktop software. I just installed over the top. Everything went well. I gave my T3 a new name. I then took all my contact data from my T2 and copied and pasted it to my T3. Worked very well. The only thing that did not come over were my catagories. That will take me a little bit of work. I could not find how to bring my appointments over so I am doing that the hard way.

Again thanks for the help.
