Running Sprints increase Anaerobic Threshold? questions and concerns?

OK my main goal is to get in tip top shape. My goal is to run 3 miles in 18mins, Currently I can run 3 miles in 27mins.

So is it true that Sprints is the best way to increase my Anaerobic Threshold, which will allow me to run at a faster speed for longer?

Also, today I ran six sprints of the lengths of a football field as hard as I could. When I was done I felt like throwing up =) is this normal? And doing sprints this way, will I see improvement quick?
