running own business but doesnt pay tax. if he registers as sole trader will child

tax benefits change? my brother-in-law is running a business from home (selling book online) and is considering registering as sole trader but worried all the tax benefits will change. his wife works full-time so they get a certain amount of money from the government but will they get more less or unchanged if he registers with inland revenue?
