system? I.E. heart and lungs.? I'm considering buying a treadmill (with a long belt for my long legs) or an *incline* treadmill with, you guessed it, 30% incline that will 'smoke me' in ten minutes...like, literally, my body will be smoking when I step off the machine....but may or may not have benefits for my heart & lungs.

I really enjoy hiking more then running when I'm outside, but there are very few hills to hike where I live and ...I'm kinda shy and don't enjoy straining and sweating and gasping for breath around strangers idly sitting in their cars y'know?

So thats why I'm considering buying a machine as opposed to just exercising in public.

Anyways!... which will be better for my aching heart?
'Hiking' uphills or running on 'flat' surfaces?

Thanks!
I'm pretty sure not all exercises do the same thing and so you just get what you put into it....I could spend the rest of my life lifting weights and my lungs wouldn't benefit from that at all. Etc.

There is no "Best exersice" to do. All have benifits in their own way. It depends on the amount of work you are putting into hiking or running. Whatever you enjoy more is the better cardiovascualar exersice for you.

I don't believe you will ever find a treadmill that gets to 30% incline. Most stop at 12 or 15.

The better exercise for strengthening your heart is to do milder aerobic activity for longer.

Sprints for 10 minutes is not as beneficial for you as an hour long 6-mile run. Always go longer with less intensity.
