]]> Well that'd be interesting.
Facebook's got an event planned for this coming Thursday and the company has offered no indication as to what it plans to unveil. The invitations said a small team at Facebook had been working on something big and invited the press to coffee to see the new product. The invitation itself, typed in Facebook's signature blue font and featuring only a coffee ring, offered no clues.
When word of the invitations got out, the number one rumor was that Facebook was all set to announce a replacement for Google Reader, a follow-on on its hashtag announcement from earlier last week. This week brings fresh speculation as to what Facebook hopes to reveal. A TechCrunch source says Facebook's big announcement is that Instagram users will soon be able to capture and share short videos. Facebook bought hugely popular photo sharing app Instagram last year but hasn't done much with the service since the acquisition. Adding a Vine-like option could prove a harsh blow to Vine parent company Twitter (provided the idea is executed well, of course) and would be the bold first step we've been waiting for from Facebook.
Facebook last week announced clickable hashtags, bringing the company in line with the likes of Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr and Pinterest. At the time, Facebook's Greg Lindley said that hashtags were just the beginning of a larger effort to help other users discover and take part in public conversations and that Facebook would be rolling out more features 'in the coming weeks and months.' Is short, shareable videos really the next step?
