my friend (whom i only met 2 mnths ago) has a 6 yr old daughter who is BEYOND spoiled. there had been3 x now where she has brought her along when we meet with friends at night for drinks in a cafe/pub (we live in europe) and the kid has literally driven all the other tables around us out of the room cos she is so loud and annoying.
a few weeks ago this friend "L", told me she would bring her kid to a dinner at my house and i hinted that i wanted it to just be a girls nite. she didnt really get the hint at first but eventually didnt bring her. last nite, she surprised me and brought her anyway. i live in a studio and had to make room for this kid who btw wouldnt shut up the whole nite. she wanted cheese and her mother gave her the entire portion i had on the tapas plate and no one else got some. the kid didnt even eat it.
again we went to the cafe we usually go to (which is licensed as a bar) and the kid drove 2 couples out. there is a zen garden on the table and i was playing with her she ripped it out of her my hands. her mother didnt bat and eye. an hr later started playing with it again and the kid started crying. the mother asked me to give it to her so i gave her the garden and 2 rakes and kept 1 rake for myself to prove a point.(you only need one rake) and the kid whined and said she wanted my rake. she demanded it and i said no. she has to say please. the room was silent and the kid refused to say please so i said no. she cant have it. the kid argued with her mother (the kid doesnt speak english yet) and eventually the mom said " just give it to her". i was so mad.
for the rest of the nite i paid her no mind and eventually at 1130 they left. afterwards my friend told me that i was 'lucky' that the mother didnt reply to my behaviour. he says in italy i need to respect the way parents treat their kids but i say i ve been a nanny for 10 yrs and i discipline kids. if parents dont like that they should be friends with an american and force their kids on me in my own house.
my british friend says i acted fine but my italian friends are pissed off. i wont invite her to my house again in fear that she ll bring her kid.
