rooting my G1

I have a G1 that is currently not activated or turned on with any cell phone provider. I can still get on the internet and the APP Market via my Wi-Fi so it's not killing me. I have been having the same issues as everyone else in wanting more space for my apps and really seeing what this android powered phone can do. I have read up quite a bit of rooting a G1, however I wouldn't say I'm an expert. A few questions and concerns that I have are as follows:

1. Can I root it without it being activated.
2. Should I root the phone with it not being activated.
3. If I want to install a new SDcard, will I have to re-root the phone for that card to get the partions and so forth.

I believe that's all that I have. I greatly appreciate everyone's help with this.

yes, you can root without being activated. in fact, a lot of people do that--a lot of people get different devices and mod them and for whatever reason (they want a evo, but get horrible sprint reception, etc.), just use them as mp3/media players.

if you "should" is all up to you. there's a chance you could completely brick the phone, and there's a lot of other chances that you could get stuck in bootloop or flash a bad rom--different problems that if you aren't willing to spend some time reading stuff, you'll hate to deal with. the stock rom is stabler in the sense that it's gonna work, but it's lacking in so many ways. i'd say root, but the choice is really up to you. weigh the pros and cons for yourself and see.

no, you don't need to reroot. you flash danger spl onto the phone itself--has nothing to do with the sd card. i'd recommend a class 6 8gb personally (i had a adata one in my g1 until it got stolen... only around $20 from newegg ).

i tried to root my g1 without it being activated and i can't get past the google account log-in. i put my username and password in and submit but it doesn't work. i think that it actually does need to be connected to the network. like i said before, i was able to use the wi-fi on it but now without being able to get passed the google account part, i just don't know. If there is anyone that can help me with this, i thank you so much. i have a few ideas but i kinda want to see what some of the experts in here think. thanks.
