Romance or No Romance, help?

Should I even really include it?

Years ago... like more than 5, I created my character, and yes, he was a vampire... i was like 10, and the story was beyond cheesy and stupid, and then twilight came out and totally ruined things for me. I totally disliked twilight, I mean, Edward freaking sparkled! About this time, I realized my story was just as awful but without the sparkling or obsessive relationship. It was just lacking lots of grammar and nice writing skills I now have.

I experimented with different plots and scenarios (they weren't even really plots) and just gave up at one point. I didn't have the mind or experience to write the story I wanted to write.

Years passed, I grew up. I shed any desire to fit in with society, and about a year ago I decided to get back to my story. I discovered my characters had sort of evolved with me. I kept their names, redid some of their personalities, and rewrote their basic back story. I decided I would write no romance story whatsoever (in an effort not to have it compared to all the new masses of vampire books). I struggled with the plot though. My character wouldn't evolve past his newly traumatic past, and nothing would change in him no matter how the book turned out. Someone had to change him! I wanted a slight romance! I took a few months of writing and gave it some thought and now.... I really want to include it. I don't care if people think the book resembles others just cause it's a love story, but I still want to make it original.

What could I do that isn't too cliche? The characters aren't teenagers, aren't in a love triangle, aren't in an obsessive manipulative relationship, but with the current plot, he saves her from an accident, and then he refuses to be with her. This causes everyone to compare it to twilight!!!!!! It's so annoying!!! What should I do? Will they even compare it if they actually read it, because I've only had it compared when I told my friends the love story part of it. What do you think I should do/change?
Oh and the non romance part of the book is good (complex, full of twists, etc) , but only if the love story exists.
yay! I'm not the only one. Twilight is an absolutely awful piece of work, I can't even understand why I'm intimidated. If it was good, I'd have a reason to be scarred. Thanks for the advice, I should really strive, not just to really to make it better than twilight (as that will be fairly easy) but to get it published and popular, just to kick a**! lol...
