Rogers Blackberry 8900 Question?

I really want to try out OS 5 but because Rogers Wireless is so freaking slow at updating I want to try another wireless companies version of it. Will using another companies version of the OS impend my ability to use it? I understand it will probably remove UMA but are there any other things I need to know or tips you can give me? Thanks
