Rock Sub-Genres?

How do you break up your rock genres?

I have about 65+ GB of music, and most of it falls into the broad rock genre. I use the rock genre for banRAB like AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, The Who, etc. I use the hard rock sub-genre for any type of harder rock, from Black Sabbath, Pantera, Nile, Fear Factory, Opeth, Slayer, Machine Head, etc...

If you have a pretty decent amount of rock music, how do you break up the sub-genres? I want to separate the different styles, but not have a different sub-genre for each band.

grunge, alternative, post-grunge, punk, classic rock, adult alternative, soft rock... the list goes on.

Most of my rock is on the harder rock end of the spectrum. But even then, you have:

Alternative Rock/Metal, Black Metal, Death Metal, Blackened Death Metal, Dark Metal, Death Core, Gothic Metal, Grindcore, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, Industrial Rock/Metal, Metalcore, Moshcore, Power Metal, Progressive Metal/Rock...and the list goes on...

Just seems like there's SO many genres and I don't want to go insane with the labeling, but just something other than "Hard Rock."

Not really a fan of any of the "-core" genre labels, though.
