Hey everyone, recently i picked up a road bike[which is going to be my school bike], but absolutely do not like the way the gears are set up, they seem to be on top of the top tube of the bike and although access to the gears is easy, it is incredibly ugly. I would like it so that the gears/shifters are on top of the bottom tube or on the side like more modern road bikes, and if not that at least at the end of my drop bars. Would would I have to do to get my shifters/gears to be in the place I Want them to be in? would I need to replace the entire handlebar?

Thanks for any answers! I hope to hear from you all soon

Since there are too many set ups that match your description to give a definitive answer (I can think of 3 off the top), take the bike to your local bike shop. They can quickly save you a lot of hassle and in the end probably some money.

It sounds like you need a clamp on type down-tube shifter set or a set that hopefully attach to a pair of braze-ons on your downtube. This last would involve the least amount of change and cost, but will depend on your bike set up.

Bar-cons, short for bar end controls, are the standard for many touring bikes. They are simple and durable. They aren't exactly cheap, but they do work well. See the link below for more

The last option is the priciest and probably way more than you want to spend. They are the combination brake and shifter. They work, but probably would cost more than your bike is worth. It would be better to get a used bike with these than to buy new ones.

You probably don't have to get new handlebars, but should definitely get new cables with your shifters. Most sets come with the cables.
