road bike beginner question:?

Now I think I really shouldn't buy the mountain bike, heavy + hard for me to speed up.

I want a decent road bike that is under $250, good for normal exercising and traveling between different workplaces.
style is important since i care about the endurance and appearance.

also, i'd really like to know more professional info about cycling.. like maintaining bicycle parts stuff..
