Is there a huge difference between the sizes for men, as there are for women? Meaning, if I am a girl, and my size is a 53'-54', could i buy a men's bike, is there some equivalent? Thanks, all answers are greatly appreciated!

Get a bike designed for a women, there is a reason there is a difference. The guys at the bike shop should have explained it to you.

Womens specific bikes generally have shorter top tube lengths than the mens bike. That said, I see more women buying men's bikes than their own specific bikes in my store as a general rule. That does not mean that they didnt try their own first but some (2 out of 5) will come in in any given day and flat out tell us they dont even want to see their own specific models and when you get right down to it we are all basically the same, two legs, torso, arms, feet and hands with a head on top and those who demand a mans bike will never ride any other so you may just be able to ride either or and not even care...
