hi! just recently bought a road bike and i was going over which pedal to get. i was inclined to get mountain bike pedals (shimano spd's) since i've already been riding mountain bikes for some time now. not only am i used to the mtb pedal and cleat system, buying mtb pedals for my racer would also save me some money by not having to buy a pair of shoes for racer pedals.
however, a friend of mine said that racer pedals are wider (i.e., they have a wider platform to put and clip your foot on) than mtb pedals (which are pretty small to keep mud from getting stuck). and they say that this wider platform of the racer pedals allow for more power to be transmitted to the cranks as you pedal down. is this true? will getting pedals with a wider base really have that much effect on performance?
