Risks of eating rare or medium rare meat?

I almost never eat red meat... usually only chicken or turkey. I'll have a steak maybe once a year at most and haven't had it since sometime in 2009 maybe. My husband's father and his father's new girlfriend were visiting and wanted to cook dinner. They made steaks, but they were very red in the middle. When I do eat steak I always tell them well done, even burnt, because I am absolutely paranoid about any meat which is even slightly undercooked. They set the table and served us and I didn't want to say anything, so I tried to just eat it and not look at it. I didn't eat a lot, but ate enough not to be rude, especially since it was the new girlfriend who cooked and it was our first time meeting her. We had dinner about 6 hours ago and I still feel sick to my stomach. I don't know if its because I haven't had steak in so long, its just hard on my stomach, if its because it wasn't well done, or if its psychological because the mere thought of unbrowned red meat makes me cringe. Should I be concerned? I know a lot of people prefer their meat that way, but even my husband gets medium well with a pink center, and he agreed it was too red even for his taste. What do you think? Are there any risks I should be aware of or do you think its just that Im not used to it?
Thank you all for the reassurance and the information!
