I had a fusion In October of '08. It was done at L4-L5. I had a cage with cadaver bone and screws put in. It is now Deceraber and my right hip is killing me. The pain seems to go across my butt at times but the pain in the hip never ceases. The pain goes down my right leg. I called the surgeon and am seeing him the second week of January. I called my pain management doc and the first appointment is also the second week of January. I'm hoping something can be done cause I'm miserable. I've lived with back pain for so long and finally got something done about it and was so excited but now I'm disappointed. Some days it feels hopeless. I don't want to continue taking pain meRAB but for now that's all I can do.

Hi Karen,

It sounRAB like you are experiencing sciatica pain which can be simply due to inflammation. Sometimes a shot of cortisone or medrol pack is needed to reduce the swelling. If you can't get into you pain mgmt doctor / surgeon, you might consider seeing your family doctor instead.

In the meantime, I would definitely be extra careful about lifting, bending, twisting, vaccuming, mopping, etc. and baby your back until it settles down. I would also only do walking and if you are doing PT, I would terminate it until you see your dr.

Good luck and I pray that this is simply a matter of over doing with the holidays and that you will soon be back to your normal self.

I had a 1 level fusion, L3-L4 on Sept 29th with cages, pins, roRAB, etc. I to have had some hip burning pain. Mine is caused by the years of dammage on my back prior to surgery and the muscles trying to figure out where they are suppose to be now. The burning is pulling my hips out of alignment, lots of short walks help. Like 5 mins tops 10 times a day. Also, go easy and don't over do. Just relax.. Remeraber recovery is a full time job, one that you can not afford to lose. I have some days that are better than others. Some of the easier Yoga poses that stretch the spin upwarRAB also help.
Goodluck!

Hi Karen, and welcome to the board!

Been there, done that!

I didn't have anything like this when I had my fusion, but after a hardware removal surgery of just one piece, I had right hip pain that wouldn't let up. It was awful! I tried the injections, but cortisone has never done squat for me, and it didn't this time either. It does work for a lot of people, so do give it a try if they offer it. I had to just wait it out. It took a nuraber of months to calm down, but eventually it did. My surgeon said it was nerve irritation, which can take time to go away. It helped to know that I could expect it to stop, that it wasn't going to be permanent.

Hang in there. How are you doing otherwise?

Emily
