I'm going to be going on a couple month backpacking trip, and I'm wanting to bring a rifle, what do you suggest?

That might sort of depend on where you're backpacking, what you expect that rifle to do for you, what you expect to encounter, what others if any plan to carry ??

Small game hunting
Marlin Papoose .22

Multi purpose
Savage 24V 30-30/20ga

Large dangerous game
Weatherby .300wby mag >at a minimum

If it just for plinking. I would get a 22 rifle. You can shoot it all day and the ammo is cheap. They are light and a couple of models break down. They are not very loud, But I would suggest taking earplugs. Once you lose your hearing. It doesn't come back

A rifle is a lot of unnecessary weight to carry when you're backpacking. On long trips especially, you want to travel as lightly as possible. When I go on long expeditions, I don't normally carry any firearm whatsoever. If you know what you're doing, and know how bears behave, you will know how to avoid a bear attack. If you are not familiar with bears, or whatever wildlife you plan on dealing with, bring bear spray or a magnum revolver, and be familiar with it.

Marlin 30-30 I carried one for years and you can fire them one handed. A lot of fellas are saying a rifle is heavy, but after a week it aint nothin, besides the Marlins a fast shooter and will handle every thing you may encounter, Cheap too, so if you wreck it...no big loss !

dude that sounds cool and all.....dont turn out like chris mccandless. if you do send your story to john krakuer and he will write a novel about you and i will read it. good luck and may god be with you.
