Riding a bike for exercise!?

so, how long would you say a bike ride should be so its considered legitimate exercise?
is there any postures or settings i can do to work different parts of my body?
ive been told riding a bike not only works your legs, but your entire body... Ive felt my arms getting worked from holding myself up... but can riding a bike work your ab's and chest aswell?

i generally just want to loose weight and be slimmer...so how could i use my bike to achieve this?

Before I was injured in a basketball accident a year ago I had used a bike, coupled with crunches, to get into the best shape of my life. I cut my mile time down to 5:34, was the fastest runner on my baseball and basketball teams, and felt great.

Biking is a lot like running except it doesnt wear down your joints and bones, but it does give you the exact same work out. Biking 4 miles with continuous peddling is approximately the same work you would do running a fast mile.

When youre first starting out everyday or every other day you should bike around 2 miles and then go home and eat a healthy meal. What you eat after you work out is what the body uses to build your muscles. After a week or two of biking 2 miles increase your distance to 3 miles. Continue at three miles for a few more weeks then when youre ready increase the distance to 4 miles. Do this until you get to 6 miles then if you feel strong enough you can keep increasing your distance or you can stay at 6 for awhile. Remember, always peddle the whole time youre biking and always try to keep a good pace no matter what distance youre riding.

Eventually if you ever get too what I got to (12 miles a day/every other day) you will see amazing benefits.

edit: also this depends on your bike and the kind of bike path youre using. If you have a really good bike and youre biking on really flat ground, the distances Ive said may need to be increased.

I ride for an hour to two hours for FUN. I also go uphill and I'm pretty tired after that. I've seen improvements in weight after a week so try that. If you can ride for longer, do so. Just don't skip more than a day, it will hurt. 2 steps forward, one step back.

Sit up straight while riding for best results.
Yes ive been told that too, I believe it (i can sometimes feel it on my whole body after a ride)
Go for as long as you can and then push yourself a little more. Bring a water bottle to keep hydrated.
