Not only did his rivals force him to defend several positions of his and attacked him on these positions, but his other rivals put him on the spot many times. Including Bachmann, both during and after the debate.

Now, getting criticized by one of your competitors is one thing, but when Sarah Palin, who doesn't appear to be running, joins in with an absolutely scathing criticism about him forcing the girls to be vaccinated, that's a sign he may be on the outs and no longer be the favorite for the nomination.
