Rewiring car brake lights, is it legal-please read for more info?

I know someone who re wired the brake lights on his car so that they not only flashed when he applied the brakes but also if he pressed a little button on the dashboard. This was very useful when someone is driving in your boot!
Just wondered, is this legal?
