Revlon ceramic straightener .......??

So I just got a new straightener, and it's the revlon ceramic. The first time I used it, my hair felt so rough and it smelled like it was on fire, I also have curly ends and it didn't really straighten them which I hate! So are there any good straighteners that u would recommend that will have your hair like pointy straight? And not feeling all rough. Also, what do you think is wrong with the straightener? Why isn't it working??? I just got it
