I had a similar experience the first time I saw a fresh starfruit.
Pretty shape. Tart and sweet at the same time. The dried slices
concentrate the sweetness. Nice to try but mostly just really cool
looking.

If I'm going for a really cool looking fruit I'll take Buddha's Hand
Citron. Back when we lived in Los Angeles metro I had a tree growing in
my yard. Exotic shape. A citrus fruit that it nearly all rind. Aroma
so nice it serves as a room freshener. Zest that works much like any
other citrus zest. The rind is so mild it can be eaten, but once tired
there didn't seem much point to having more of it. Looks, aroma, zest
good, rind bland. Three out of four was not bad.

Citron tree, very pretty and the citron flower is sweet, but the fruit
of the poor citron is boring-dull to eat ...

The original song about lemons works better. ;^)

I saw something unusual today at the Asian supermarket,
fresh dragonfruit. I'd seen sliced, dried dragonfruit at
At Trader Joe's but never before saw it fresh.

Externally, it's got a tough red rind. Cutting off one end,
I see a red outer layer and a white interior with many tiny
black seeds. It's easy to peel off the red part, leaving the
soft white part. I then sliced the white part thinly like a
salami.

The texture is okay. The seeds are not bothersome.
The white flesh is slightly sweet. Otherwise, it doesn't
have much flavor.

I'm not going to buy it again. It was an interesting
learning experience, but I don't see using it for anything.
It might make an interesting visual accent for a fruit salad,
but other than that, I'm hard pressed to think of a good
use for it. At about $3.50 for a fruit about the size of
a mango, it's not exactly cheap. It was worth buying
once, but that's it for me.

FWIW the flavor of Star fruit and dragon fruit, both of which are
common here in Hawaii, depends on the specific plant you get them
from. Some are far better and more tasty than others.

Doug Freyburger mumbled something about:

When I was having kidney dialysis, a sign was posted on the bulletin board
warning that starfruit can kill people with kidney disease, so be careful
about consuming it if your kidneys are bad.
