Hello everyone,
I had a Lami and a fusion at the L5-S1 level in Dec. I have good days and bad days but i am healing. I am in the military and we run alot. I love to run it has become a hobbie for me. My Doctor that did my fusion said I will never be able to run again...is that true? what do people do to stay in shape? thanks in advance.

This is a difficult to answer on a message board. Because, while we can answer you based on our personal experiences and what we've read, etc., we don't have the specific details on your specific situation. However, I have heard of people eventually running after fusion. Most people that run, are told they have to wait ONE year until they run again - but I have read about and known people to return to running one year after fusion and I'm sure it depenRAB on individual healing.

Your best bet at this point, is just start walking and walk a lot - this will be the best thing you can do to build spine strength and it is also really good for you. And you can start building up the nuraber of miles you walk pretty quickly! :) This will ensure your spine is in the shape it neeRAB to be if you are permitted to return to running after one year.

I would bring up your concern to your Doctor - that you really want to run again and you've heard about cases of people running after one year post surgery when their back is completely healed. Of course, you may never be able to run with the intensity you used to, but it's still a possibly (again this is just based on what I've read in other people's cases).

After a year you could always seek another Doctor's opinion regarding running.

I hope this helps.
