Restore Woes

Well, the TX has been locking up after most every hotsync. Today I decided to bite the bullet. I did a hotsync then made sure Backup Buddy had backed up. I used my card backup to backup the whole world to the card. 3 backups, right?

Hard reset. Hotsync. Nothing. Didn't install diddly. I had BB do a zoomback. Same.

Restore from the card. Things came back (all except all registration info and all preferences). But any time I touch the screen the thing resets.

Damn that Hard Reset.

Palm tech support will always tell you to do a hard reset, rename the backup directory and get the device to near virgin status.

I recommend only deleted the saved_preference file and then doing a soft reset. This will almost always clear the issue to avoid a continual reset loop.

It will cause you to have to re-register all installed extra software. Therefore, I usually keep the registrations in Mobile Database and it's the first program I restore the code and then go from there.

This process usually keeps all of my user data intact although perhaps not accessible until I restore the registration code. And then one at a time - I use these programs and determine which one is the cause of the problems.

I stay away from things such as Avantgo, Vindigo and others that go out to the net and bring info into the device - these are notoriusly bad about causing resets.

Everyone is different in their approach - and other approaches might be successful. But in my 10 plus years of Palm'ing and during my beta testing for Palm for 6 of those 10 years - I only lost data that was unrecoverable once. And that was might fault because I hadn't hot sync'd properly. For what it's worth the lost data was on a Palm Pilot Professional and I was installing a 2MB memory card as part of the beta test - yes Palm used to have user changeable memory card's ala a PC motherboard type configuration but that was a long time ago.

Thanks. I finally got most of it back. I did have a LOT of programs on it.

Finally got BB to zoom back. I hadn't done that before, always just let it go. The newer version I apparently have to choose each app/dbf to restore.

I'll keep a copy of your note for next time. Today, I'm going to be clicking icons to see what I lost.

Thanks again. Next time I decide to hard reset, just kick me, OK?

Don't know if this is relevant, but I've had to hard reset a few times on my T3. I use RescoBackup and whenever I've had to restore from it, it has always restored perfectly including registration for all previously installed apps.
