Requirement? Full Keyboard. E70 vs ???

Greetings Howardforum-members,

Closing in on my first year of university, I'm looking to upgrade from my age-old SE k700i. The main reason for upgrading would be because of my anticipated increase of use of text-messaging. (Perhaps voip calling over hot-spots?)

Doing my research on HWF, RFD, and google, I think that I've narrowed my choices to the Nokia E70 and perhaps its competitors. This phone has everything I really want/need/require:
- Full keyboard
- Wifi-capability
- Decent camera (more of a luxury, not needed)

From what I understand (granted, my knowledge on cell-phone technology is very limited, and I'm out of the game quickly with all the new techno-jargon) 3G is not available on this phone, though I'm not sure if I will need 3G, nor am I sure if it's even available in Canada.

I've read of battey-life problems, but as with a lot of Nokia's, its not too big of a deal. There is one area of concern which I humbly ask for advice on.

The E70 comes either as an E70-1, or E70-2. Difference? (From Wiki)
-E70-1 for the world market with tri-band (900, 1800, 1900MHz) GSM and UMTS (cheaper)
- E70-2 for the Americas with tri-band (850, 1800, 1900MHz) GSM and EDGE packet data capability (quite a few bucks more)
>> I will be using the phone within Canada. No real plans to use it worldwide, as my immediate future sees no needs, so if the cheaper-variant suits my needs fine, I'd rather go for the less-expensive option)

For now, my sights are set on this E70.. Nothing really in the market that quite compares. I'm not interested in Blackberries, so if you can suggest another model that is in the same "ballpark" as the E70, please speak up! (Just don't suggest an E90.. I'm not looking to drop a thousand on a phone)

Thanks for all your help and advice!

I'm in agreement with you. The E90 is really really nice, but the E70 would be juuust right.. I have heard complaints about the battery life of the E70 on several forums, though. I think you need to turn off features that you know you will not use (like european bands and such). I am really looking forward to getting this phone (and finally ditching Verizon.)

I'm still comparison shopping though, so any additional input on this phone and others of its kind (clamshell QWERTY) would be appreciated. No, the VX9900 does NOT count!

You seem to dislike Verizon but the Samsung SGH-i760 thats slatted for release before xmas is looking rather nice to me...take a look at it before you leave them.

as for BMWWW, take a look at the HTC TyTN II aka the Kaiser (really cool design), and if you prefer to stick with SE there's the P1. Not sure if you guys get Helio up there but if so check out the Helio Ocean(kind of bulky but nice). Not a fan of Moto so I wont suggest any. Samsung also has the i620 but i dont really care for it. Oh and the Samsung T729 aka Blast(far less features than the other phones mentioned but its one of the smaller phones with a QWERTY keyboard and probably the most affordable too)

Hope that helps!
