Reprogram 1998 Jeep Cherokee Sport Keyless Entry Remote?

I have a 1998 Jeep Cherokee Sport with the Keyless Entry System. The batteries died and I bought new ones to replace them. When I went to go use it after I replaced the batteries, however, the remote didn't work.
I've tried starting the car, leaving the door open, and holding the lock button; leaving the door open, turning the key to accessory on, not turning the ignition on, and holding down both buttons.

Neither of these worked... Do I need to go the dealer, or is there some way to reprogram it myself?

Did you put the batteries in right? if so then the remote might have died. you usually don't have to reprogram them, from a dead battery. At the dealer they have a device that tells if the remote is sending a signal and how strong the signal is. That is usually a free service. But if its dead and you buy a new one, expect at least a half hour charge to program the new one.
