(CNN) -- Five people were killed late Saturday night when their limousine caught on fire on a bridge in the San Francisco Bay Area, police said.
Five other occupants were able to escape when flames overtook the vehicle as it was headed west on the San Mateo Bridge, according to California Highway Patrol Officer Amelia Jack who spoke to CNN affiliate KGO.
Authorities do not know where the women were headed when they noticed smoke in their limousine.
The car pulled over; the driver and four others were able to get out.
They tried to retrieve the other five but were unsuccessful, Jack said.
Some good Samaritans who pulled over and attempted to help were also unsuccessful.
Among those who survived, three suffered from smoke inhalation and one had severe burns, Jack told the affiliate.
The westbound side of the bridge is expected to remain closed until early Sunday morning, the California Highway Patrol said.
