Replacing a cam sensor on a Ford Explorer?

I have a 4wd, 6cyl, 1995 Ford Explorer. I had the check engine light come on and the only code pertaining to it is that I need to replace a "cam sensor." I believe this is the sensor that determines that the shaft is at the proper position? Anyway, I had it diagnosed at two separate auto repair shops and they both gave the same diagnosis. But money is real tight and I'm getting quotes of around $600 to replace it. Way too high for us right now. I do know some stuff about auto repair; I can do a basic tune up, change oil, etc. Is this something I can do myself fairly easily? If so can someone point me to guidelines somewhere? In this recession $600 is a ton of money and it looks like the price of the part itself isn't that high unless I'm mistaken.
