Repetition on TV

Why do certain movies seem to get shown over and over on TV over the years regardless of their success, whereas others never get a repeat?

A case in point today was the "classic" Doc Savage: Man of Bronze, which failed spectacularly at the cinema but seems to get shown on some terrestrial channel at least every three or four years (I'm pretty certain it is only a couple of years since I last watched it on BBC2 I think).

As much as I like the camp Doc Savage movie, some more variety would be nice. It seems Jason and the Argonauts and Clash of the Titans are the only fantasy films the schedulers have heard of (at least until the recent arrival of Harry Potter and LotR) meaning we are pretty much guaranteed one or the other at xmas, sometimes both. Flash Gordon is another that seems to be aired at every opportunity, and Bill & Ted's two excellent movies (which I seriously heart) seem to be screened almost every year.

Why can't we have more variety? There are dozens more films like those I've mentioned, but the only chance to see them is on DVD, subscription channels, or by downloading them illegally, because we always get repeats of the usual movies instead on TV.

Take the fantasy genre for instance, slightly less well known but very good movies like Willow and Hawk the Slayer are very rarely shown, and there are countless more which never get a single screening on terrestrial TV.

I suppose that is the good thing about a modern broadband connection; if the provider doesn't show what you want officially, you can always download it from some good samaritan who is making it available unofficially.

Hawk the Slayer! ;)

Showing films that bring in ratings and have cross generational appeal like the ones you mentioned is what TV is all about at the end of the day.
Considering that most films can be picked up for a pittance on DVD these days even a few months after release, there's surely no need to lambast TV channels for not keeping up with the times (or not having the rights to show film X as is often the case) or to engage in illegal activities unless you're just being tight.
Wasn't Hawk the Slayer recently issued on DVD?
