Repairing soil compaction damage in garden?

Hello,

This year we tried growing a vegetable garden, since it's the first time we attempted doing this I watered the plants every day with tons of water. It looks like I killed 2 pepper plants, the leaves are all droopy and yellow. I also planted corn from seedlings and I was watering it daily with a couple of gallons a day (2 rows of 5 stalks)

When the corn was planted we tilled the dirt and it was nice and loose (2 months ago) now the dirt is really hard and stiff. I noticed that some stalks are turning purple on the bottom. I read that by overwatering I compacted the soil. Hey, I'm new at this, I wanted to make sure That plants lived, but I'm killing them by over watering. I'm cutting back on watering.

On the corn plants, is there a way to fix the compacted soil or I'm I out of luck? the stalks are about 20" high and we are in the Los Angeles area (warm weather).

Thanks
