Repairing rip in denim jeans with patch - wash before or after applying the patch?

I accidentally tore a hole in my favorite seven jeans the last time I wore them and I want to fix it with a iron-on patch, but I'm not sure if I should wash the jeans first before I put on the patch, cuz I needed to wash them anyway, or if I should put the patch on the slightly "dirty" fabric and THEN wash them. It's a really simple, clean tear that runs along the same direction as the denim fibers, but then I'm worried if I wash them without patching them first the rip will fray really bad and it will be hard to patch them well enough that the tear isn't noticeable.


I need a mom's help!!! What should I do?
 
The iron on patch might not stick properly if they are dirty. See what it says on the packet, coz it could be that it dosent last as long.
