Repair on Nokia E61 - what to do?

I bought an E61 from a store in Toronto and they sold me a branded phone. Took it back for debranding flashing and they did it.

After that, it had problems - battery would die in 10 mins of use, random "SIM not registered" errors. I took it back.

First they tried to "fix" it in-house - didn't work, had same problems and I dropped it back.

Now, one month later they tell me this:

1. They'll give me a new board in the phone since Nokia didn't get back to them, accept the phone blah blah blah....
2. It will be my same housing (i had cracked my housing) as before.
3. I will get a new box from them to match the serial number on the board.

What do I do? If something goes wrong again, will Nokia accept this for warranty repair? I'm supposed to have warranty repair, fyi.

Your only hope is that they make it right. Once the phone is improperly flashed /debranded, the warrahty is gone.

Unauthorized repair attempts will also void warranties.

No, that is misrepresentation and is exactly why we recommend not buying handsets on Ebay.

Suggesting that one do this shows a complete lack of ethics.

I wouldn't do that...don't want someone else to get screwed.

That said : why is it my problem if the seller screws up on a flashing (a service they offer/charge extra for in-house)?

Another question - where are they getting this board from? Another defective phone? If they can give me a new board, why not a factory sealed E61?

My panties are not in a wad, I prefer the Britinay look.

Even as a joke, it is irresppsonsible because people WILL and STILL do this.

Technically, they are. But you will need them to own up to it and make it right. When we screw up a phone during a repair, we replace it (with a new or used identical model in sinmilar or better condition). While this has only happened 2 times in the last 3 years, it does happen. Now, when flashing phones, customes must acknowledge there is a risk and off eliminating our liability

This shows that they are taking responsibility so give them credit. The board could be from a donor that is otherwise perfect with trashed housings or even from a brand new phone. They are using your housings so the phone is returned to you in the condition it was brought in to them. They did not damage your housngs. Besides, they can them sell the new housings to offset their losses on the board (as well as selling the charger and battery). I see nothing wrong with this. They are making the situation right and you get a brand new phone. You could always ask for the new housings or offer a couple of bucks for the parts.

I understand the point about the housing and the housing isn't my worry - I'll pay them another $50 to get a new factory sealed phone if the damaged housing as a cost concern is their issue.

My concern is - with this "board swap", where I have no idea about the source of the board, if something happens and has to be sent to Nokia, will Nokia have problems with doing warranty work on it?

Another thing - the flash was required because they sold me a branded phone; I didn't ask for it because i wanted the latest firmware or something. Just to clarify.

Yeah, that I wouldn't mind - my problem is that i am not comfortable with a "board swap" - no idea where they got the board, no idea what the warranty implications are etc etc..

the warranty is already gone since u sent it in to fix...just ask them, give u a new e61 and say u will be willing to pay $60 usd extra. I think they will go for it

Actually, they sell the phone and say the phone comes with warranty. And they say that they will first try to do things in-house and if that doesn't work - send to Nokia, UNDER the warranty.

So now, if Nokia isn't responding to them, i see that totally as their problem.

I picked it up and they have a new board on it (they say, call timer was 00:00:00 though) and I had them put it on the receipt that the warranty from nokia is going to be on there.

I hope the repair works out. Thanks, this thread reinstituted a dose of reality for me. I had been watching ebay and searching for the lowest price I could find on an E61. After reading this, I decided to find an etailer that provided a written warranty and repairs.

I placed an order with importgsm on 01/25/7 for overnight delivery. By noon 01/26/7 I had my new phone. Payed a slight premium @ just over $400 USD including delivery charge. My phone was built in Finland and so-far I love it.

Best of all, 2-4 day return privelage and full one year warranty included and I could have purchased an additional 3 years. Sometimes it's worth it to pay a little more. Hope that I don't have to use that warranty though.
