repair costs of japanese cars vs. american cars?

I'm looking to buy a used car, and I'm torn between the Dodge/Ford lineup, or the Toyota/Honda/Mitsubishi cars. Are the repair costs any different for Japanese cars vs. American cars? I really like the reliability of the foreign cars, but if repairs are much cheaper for American cars, it might sway my opinion...
