i was advised by the housing authority here in dallas that because of my credit and renters history( i'm still paying on a eviction amount from last year) my best bet is to find a home or condo through a private owner who might be more willing to work with my current situation until i have everything paid in full. my question is how to find private owners so i don't waste time applying to apartments or homes that will more than likely deny me anyway. please no snide comments... i've paid my penance, i'm just trying to get back on my feet.

You are pushing a rope here. 99.9% of landlords check credit and rental history, then make renting decisions accordingly. I'm not making a snide comment, but a few months of history between your and your unpaid eviction will not be enough to compel landlords to rent to you. How do you find them? I'm concerned that if you post a 'housing wanted' ad, you are going to get responses from every "out of the country" spammer that wants you to wire them money. Scams, all of them.

You are going to have to do some work here, it won't be easy.

Check Craigslist. Owners are looking for people who 'Pay their rent' and many are willing to overlook past problems. Just don't take advantage of the landlord. If you do find a willing person then you have a good chance of improving your record. Try and find a reasonable place that is not more than you will safely afford. Make sure you keep a record of the dates and methods of payment. Good Luck.
