HELP !!!

I bought what I thought was a non registered 9242 from Ontario, tried to activate it in WPG and Bell says it's a rented machine and needs to be returned from renter..any way around this?
Thanks,
BigD

Unlikely. Rental units can't be purchased and the receiver ID is in the database @ Bell. Hate to say it, but you got a bad deal. You can't register it.

There is no way arounf this...
The person who sold you the machine knew it was a rented machine since he/she has been paying rental fees since they got it. The person who sold it to you didn't own the machine, so therefore had no rights to sell it
If the seller has your number you can keep the boxes Bell will send you and wait until Bell bills the seller for non return of rental unit. He will more than likely call you back, and at that point you can tell them if they want the machine back they need to return your money

This is the main reason why people should call Bell BEFORE they purchase an already owned unit. NEVER TRUST THE PERSON WHO WANTS TO SELL A RECEIVER! Always call Bell BEFORE you make a purchase to verify if the seller called to let them know he/she is selling the receiver, and to make sure that it is not, as in the present case, a rental unit

Well, he now tells me its a mistake and the installer took the wrong receiver when he cancelled Bell (apparently he owned one and rented one). He hasn't been paying since he moved. If he somehow pays or gets the issue resolved, is there a way for Bell to let me use this one without having to swap machines?

Unlikely. A rental unit is classified as that in Bell's inventory system. Rental units units are typically completely different from an accounting point of view as well. It used to be that Bell didn't own the rentals, a third party leasing company did, but I'm not sure if that is still the case.

I see only 2 options:
1 - Return it for a refund.
2 - If the guy that sold it to you can convince Bell to send him his unit (or suitable replacement) then exchange it.

a technician would never ever take back a rented receiver, Bell always issues out prepaid boxes used to send the receivers back.

Wrong. An awful lot of Rented receivers in MDU's are handed back to Tech's on a Daily basis.

Pretty sure this is not the case here but just wanted to point out that there is a procedure in place for Techs collecting receivers.

As a side note, I was in a warehouse a few weeks ago, where there is a stack of Receivers that customers INSISTED that the Tech's take away with them. Most are from cancelled accounts and 90% were rentals.

Oh Well :(,

Looks like at the very least he will give me my $$ back, now to find a legit 9242....

My bad...sorry about that !!
