Renewing contract with Fido/ freedom?

I just ended my 3 year contract with Fido and they called me up asking me to renew my contract for two more years. I did it because I don't know anything about phones (my brother got me my phone for my birthday and he did all the negotiations for my contract), plus I like what I pay, it's all I can afford ($17) and I don't want to buy a smart phone because I know with internet it would cost me a lot. So I renewed my contract with Fido but I'm told that it was a bad decision on my part. Why is this so? What advantage did I have had I not rushed into renewing my contract? What would you have done in my situation?
