rename a music file so my stereo plays them?

I have bear share. I have a few songs on my Acer hard drive. I transferred them onto my gig/thumb/flash drive, but my new Sharp stereo which has a flash drive reader won't play the files. How do I rename the files so my stereo plays them?
 
Just renaming them is unlikely to be the answer.

Find out what format they are in - and convert them to MP3 files.
You will need an audio app that can read the format they are in - that can also save as MP3s.
Try Audacity - its free and highly trusted.
Or try looking for a "[format] to MP3 converter"

You can find out the format by checking what the file extension is.
 
It's easy!

Assuming you have windows 7,go to control panel,top right-view by large icons, select folder options, click the view tab, unselect "hide extensions for known file types", and apply!

Now click on your unrecognized music file and press F2, now make sure your file name ends with .mp3 and it should be recognized by your music player.
