Removing Paint from Front Porch Columns--the major stripping is done, we've used

the paint thinner...? ...and now there is crusty paint residue left behind. What is the best way to remove this? I have steel wool and a wire brush, but at this phase, would a scrub brush do me more good? We're trying to prep this for repainting, and it's been EXHAUSTING to get the original paint job off.
