(CBS/AP) ANDREWS AIR FORCE BASE, Md. - President Obama has paid tribute to Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three others killed in the assault on the U.S. compound in Libya, calling them patriots who served America's ideals — and laid down their lives for others.
Mr. Obama took part in a transfer of remains ceremony in a hangar at Andrews Air Force Base, joined by Vice President Joe Biden and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.
"Today we honor four Americans who gave their lives for our country and our values," Clinton said.
"They didn't simply embrace the American ideal - they lived it," Mr. Obama told the audience in attendance.
After meeting with families of the victims, Mr. Obama watched as flag-draped cases containing the remains were carried off of a transport plane and loaded into four black hearses.
Also killed in the Tuesday assault were Americans Sean Smith, Glen A. Doherty and Tyrone S. Woods.
Mr. Obama vowed to bring those responsible to justice — and "stand fast" against attacks on U.S. embassies.
CBS News correspondent Nancy Cordes reports eight busloads of people from the State Department traveled to the ceremony.
U.S. officials are investigating whether the assault was a coordinated terrorist attack that took advantage of protests in the Arab world over an anti-Muslim video.
