Release of autopsy photos?

That's a department-by-department policy. Most likely, both the police department and the coroner's office took photos, so you could go to either agency.

I know in Florida, there is the Dale Earnhardt law that won't allow the release of autopsy photos to anyone but family members or other law enforcement agencies.

Will a local police department or detectives office release the autopsy photos of a suicide to the family? What about the photos taken at the scene?

Don't tell me I'm sick unless you've been through it. The questions and the unknown will eat at you until you have nothing left.

Under freedom of information, they should be available. Go to the agency and submit your request.

You may think you want to see these - but in hind sight - you would have rather not. Memories of your loved one should be of good times and special moments. While I fully understand and respect your wishes, these are not going to assist you with your grieving. It will most likely place some horrid and unpleasant memories of the incident, and your loved one.

I am sorry for your loss.

Due to the sensitive nature of the incident and the graphic nature of the photographs, our department will not release autopsy photos. It is certainly not the last image you want to see of a family member.

I have not lost a loved one, but I have seen the pain caused on many occasions. We do our best to explain the situation, and answer all questions, but our District Attorney has supported our decision to with hold photos.
