Reinstalling Palm Desktop

I had to uninstall my palm desktop for a Tungsten T5. When I go to reinstall, it will not give me the option to reinstall.

To try to solve this, I uninstalled the palm desktop first and cleaned the registry. I don't see any remaining reference to the palm desktop. But when I run the installation CD, it skips the installation (as if it is already installed) and jumps to other options.

Can anyone help please? Thanks in advance!

A couple of things to check:

1) Did you physically delete the Palm folder on your computer under your programs - or at least rename it?
2) Did you restart your computer after you performed the uninstall?
3) Are you on a home network? If you are, you want to make sure the palm folder under your user name and another other palm user has been deleted. You can usually find this information in the Documents and settings folder on your hard drive.

If you didn't perform these two items, I would perform them and then try the reinstall again.

This is a timely message as, today, I have wasted yet another day reinstalling all my Palm software after yet another unrecoverable crash of my T5. I am beginning to lose faith. I never had this many problems with my old T2 and, dare I say it, my old Psion never let me down once.

However, two pieces of advice here. Number one, before uninstalling or deleting anything, make a copy of the PC user directory somewhere. In the main Palm directory on the PC where your Palm desktop software is installed should be a sub-directory with your device name. Make a copy because if all else fails you can recover data from here later.

Secondly, even if you uninstall Palm, it won't necessarily delete the directory into which the desktop was installed.

Finally, I really wouldn't recommend messing with the registry and, as one who has done many, many reinstalls of the Palm desktop, I never have and it's necer caused me a problem.

Thanks to you both for replying.

I did do the first three things listed, but to no avail.

Any other ideas I can try?

thanks,
dave

If your comfortable with the registry editor and it appears that you are:

Search for the user name that you used on the Palm Desktop. Delete those keys and any key that relates just to Palm and not the Palm Desktop, assuming you have only one Palm device on this machine.

Also, delete any reference to HotSync.

And of course you must reboot the computer before attempting another install to reload the registry.

Thanks for your suggestion. My daughter is on that computer right now, but I'll give it a try... and I'll let you know.

best,
dave

I see that my pal Moose Man suggested what I was going to suggest next. I am very timid with registry editor, but I am not immune to get into it. There has to be some evidence still left on your computer that you have had Desktop software on your computer. As my friend, PalmTealLover has said recently, "must eliminate waste" however in this case, the waste is on your desktop and it is causing huge road blocks for you. Before you can proceed, you have GOT to get rid of all evidence of the Desktop being on your computer previously before you can reinstall.

As a follow up, I got it to work. It took doing a search on the registry to find anything with Palm, US Robotics, HotSync in the name. Result - over 1000 entries! This after an uninstall and a registry cleaner! Reinstall worked fine. Thanks to all!

"a search on the registry to find anything with Palm, US Robotics, HotSync in the name. Result - over 1000 entries!"

Yikes. Never did that search - but that's just an amazing number. Glad you're fixed. For future reference, I use RegSeeker - don't quite trust its "all in one clean," even with backups (used it 3 times over 3 months, and one resulted in lost shortcuts and a few other little "snafus") - but as a "sniffer" for errant or old entries it's just SUPER. Ver# is 1.35 I believe, and it's freeware. Just be VERY careful using the "clean" feature as it's a little "overly thorough." The "find" feature, however is terrific and finding every nuance of leftover junk from uninstalled apps - more than RegCleaner or any other reg-clean app I've tried.

First, it's a good idea to post things like this under a new topic since it will get lost in an unrelated topic. Second, exactlly what have you done to set up the Palm? Do you have the original CD and have you installed the desktop software? Are you using a serial port or a USB to serial adaptor? Is your PC a desktop or a laptop? Please give me as much information as you can since just telling me that they won't find each other doesn't give me much to go on.

I Had No Software For It And Had To Reset It. I Down Loaded Desk Top And Am Using A Serial Port. I Am Using A Pc...
