Registering Your Cricket number for SMS services

So as not to totally hijack the Cricket 411 thread...

I have had absolutely no luck at all registering my cricket nuraber with any online services that utilize text messages. This includes AIM IM Forwarding, Twitter, Google 411, grandcentral.com, etc. Any time I try, the confirmation code never makes it to my phone, and within an hour I usually get a text from Cricket saying that they're not participating in this event at this time.

I assumed this was simply a limitation of the service and one of the prices you pay for unlimited everything at so low a price, but now Jammis is saying that he's registered his Cricket nuraber with AIM multiple times (and I believe him) and I'm beginning to wonder if it has something to do with my market or my account.

Can people chime in with their experiences using SMS with online services and what market they're in? I'll try to add a poll to the thread to make responses easier to track. :)

Thanks!

Twitter: Failed. "Not participating in this event at this time" | Short code: 40404
Jaiku: Failed. "NPITEATI"
Turablr: Failed "NPITEATI"
AIM: Haven't tried.
Frucall: Failed.

Those are the only one's I've tried or can think of as of now

I probably should have added an option for neting being able to get any of them to work. And the weather channel SMS service gets your zip code, not your area code. That's what I get for rushing. :erabaresse

I only tried google and weather... I never received my text from google, but the 411 call worked just fine.. got my nuraber and they connected me.

The weather one doesn't work... most of these services are only provided to one carrier, so it's not just a cricket limitation.. it's very likely that only one carriers customers can use this service.

I know the phonecalls work fine -- I definitely wouldn't still be with Cricket if they didn't. ;)

Those actually work with pretty much all of the major carriers. Twitter even has a Canadian short code. They all work with my AT&T service.

The Rivals boarRAB (college sports forum) will send out text messages of breaking news to people with cell phones. I've tried my Cricket nuraber and it wouldn't work.

Currently Cricket doesnt participate in those sorts of things. There is talk that we may soon though. More as I find out.

Yet we have four people who claim to have been able to register for IM Forwarding. I'm not calling anyone a liar, but I *am* very confused.

Unless of course people are confusing using AIM via the SMS short codes with the actual forwarding. I *can* use the short codes for AIM just fine.

Awesome, thanks. :)

Actually, my first comment was correct... They only work with the carriers who have subscribed with them.. Some of the very popular SMS services may have signed contracts with all of the major carriers, but most of them don't have ALL of the carriers.. they might have 2 or 3, but rarely/never all of the major ones.

A perfect example... only cingular users can text their votes for american idol.

the reason is that those services charge the carriers per text (even the 'FREE' services but it's a very small amount like a penny or two). traditional carriers have not problems paying it because either the user is paying $.15 a text or they're on a plan. either way the carrier is collecting extra money from the user for the texting. for a carrier like cricket tho, it would really add up.

Have any of you thought that maybe just maybe when you send a text message to short nuraber like 40404 it looks like a ring tone junk site, and since twitter uses that nuraber, all short nurabers under 7-10 are blocked at the server, forcing you to get the ring tones you want from the cricket clicks crap or what ever?.

and yes I know what twitter. I am truxter on twitter ... I know it isnt a ringtone company, but cricket might not know.

and to those who talk about raking up a high bill with sms on cricket, you must not have cricket.... sms is free.

in sum, I think it's the tiny nurabers that are being blocked.

google text works fine on my cricket.. locate it in your gmail.

man you need hukt on fonix. that was very difficult to read. and by the way why drag up a 4 month old thread. things might have changed by now.

anyways I did hear some time ago that premium text services were coming to cricket, but no one ever told me it was officially launched.

and if you actually read what i wrote before... many "FREE" services participate in revenue sharing with the big carriers. they get a little bit of money everytime a custer sms's them. with traditional limited carriers they charge 15 cents a message or aywhere from $15-$20 for unlimited text, so the "FREE" services charge the carrier like a penny or two per text they receive. the carrier is happy because they are collecting 14 cents for a message vs. collecting nothing if the customer doesn't use the service. Cricket doesn't collect anything or charge extra for text messages. so they cannot afford to payout any money to third parties to give cricket's customers access to the "FREE" services offered by third party companies.

yes cricket does want you to buy ringtones from them, but that's not why they block short codes.
