I had to do the same thing a few years back and it can be done. DMV is going to need a few items. A vehicle inspection report done by CHP where they will match engine ID and frame and run the numbers to make sure it was not reported stolen. A statement from you and perhaps another form, so you'll need to stop by DMV and get all the details. CHP is a pain since you need to make an appointment. The whole process can take 2-4 weeks.
