Register car for state inspection?

Unfortunately I was not able to finish fixing everything on my car before my 30 day temp plates expired. The DMV says I can't get temp plates twice. I want to tow my car to the shop for final inspection. Can the mechanic inspect a car with no valid registration? I'm taking it to the same guy who inspected it the first time.
