I'd like people to give me their opinion on this...
here is my argument
1.) Marriage is a cultural universal. In other words it is not an institution exclusive to the Western world and by no means to Christianity, in fact it predates Christ. Therefore how can people (fundie Christians) claim that gay marriage will ruin the institution of marriage as if Christians owned the patent on marriage?
2.) In America we have the fundamental right to the pursuit of happiness and it has already been established in previous court cases that marriage is a fundamental right in our country. With this in mind, considering the separation between church and state, how can a group of people be denied this right.
3.) For those who say that homosexuality is a mental disorder: a mental disorder by definition is a condition that effects one's ability to function and lead a happy, independent life. So far gay ppl only seem to have so many problems (generalization, esp when coming out and accepting themselves) because of the unhealthy beliefs of a segment of our society.
4.) I wont even address the ppl who think being gay is a choice because that is just too nonsensical...
5.) If there is a separation between church and state then why to churchs even have power to marry? why not like France where you are married before the state and then (if you choose) married "before God" in a separate ceremony at the institution of your religion.
6.) With this in mind "marriage" is just a word in the english language for a concept so it is unjust and nonsensical to insist on "civil unions" only for gays. Some cultures have allowed gay marriage in the past so I find it hard to believe (impossible) that aversion to using the word marriage is not based in religious doctrine. Which is supposed to have no sway in the workings of the government.
I've noticed many homophobes on here so I would especially like those of you who are homophobic to respond to this argument
