Refinishing Aluminum Rims with Clear coat?

ok so my rims are pitting and the clear coat is pealing off. so i want to refinish them and clear coat them after. so i would sand them with 800 then 1000 then 1500 then buff them with polish then clear coat them? or sand them, then clear coat it then 1500grit sand the clear coat then buff with polish?
