Referencing what an author says in text HHHEEELLPP?

When I am referencing authors can anyone suggest any other ways.

?? suggests
according to ??
?? explains
?? states that
In ?? opinion .....
 
Typically, you would put it in the past tense. For example: "Smith suggested..." "Jones stated that..."

All of your suggestions are appropriate, and there are enough of them that you can use them and not be repetitive.
